Evans Wafula

Evans Wafula is a seasoned human rights and media development expert with over twelve years of experience working with international and national NGOs. He began his career in 2004 at the Independent Medico Legal Unit (IMLU) as an advocacy and communication officer, where he edited The Rights Journal and utilized advocacy journalism to combat torture in Kenya. With a strong background in both human rights and media, he was invited as a visiting faculty member at the United Nations University–International Leadership Institute (UNU-ILI), training journalists from developing countries and the Middle East on conflict reporting. In 2007, he was nominated for the prestigious joint United Nations University/Japan Press Centre fellowship in Japan. Wafula has served as a correspondent and bureau chief for leading foreign news agencies, including the Finnish-based Kansan Uutiset, Maailman Kuvalehti, and Yle Broadcasting, as well as the London-based Africa Week Magazine and the Dutch-based AfricaNews.com. He later became project director for the Dutch-based Africa Interactive Media Foundation. Wafula has also held leadership roles, serving twice on the board of the Foreign Correspondents’ Association of East Africa, representing over 300 foreign journalists. Currently, he works as an independent consultant specializing in human rights and media development, with a focus on Africa’s political transformation. A prolific writer, he has edited and published several reports on human rights and press freedom, including Shielding Impunity (2006), Under the Mask of Democracy (2004), and Beyond the Frontline, an in-depth investigation into human rights violations under international law.
